Kaner, Esther E. Esther E. Kaner, 94, of Superior died Wednesday, Sept.
5, 2007. SERVICE:11:30 a.m. Sunday in the Downs Funeral Home. Burial will be

, consummate saleswoman, wife and mother who always put
family first, died Wednesday night, Sept. 5, 2007. She was 94. Esther was born in Superior and grew up in the back of her
parents' long-gone tailor shop on Fifth and Tower Avenue from where she
roller skated with friends to school. She attended Carpenter Elementary and
Superior Central High schools. After graduating, she worked as a saleswoman, helping
stores with going-out-of-business sales. But perhaps, she is best known for
her contagious smile when she greeted customers in the shoe department at the
former Roth's department store. Kaner At 25, she married Abe G. Kaner. They had three children,
Myrna Kaner (deceased), Barbara Munic of Duluth and Elyse Kaner of
Minneapolis. Esther enjoyed playing mahjong (a Japanese tile game) with
friends. She liked baking, cooking, noshing and picnicking in Pattison Park.
She fancied Superior's annual Fourth of July parade and waving the American
flag in front of her home on Hammond Avenue when her children drove by the
house after a visit. But most of all, she loved being with family. Esther was a life member of Hadassah, a women's volunteer
organization, and the Women's League of Temple Beth El. She spent countless
hours on decorating committees, creating table centerpieces for charitable
events. Years ago, for instance, she sprayed freshly picked cattails a
metallic-gold color after Abe dutifully retrieved them from an accommodating
pond. She was a member of the former Synagogue of the Hebrew
Brotherhood, Superior Hebrew Congregation and Temple Beth El. She was also a
member of Adas Israel Congregation in Duluth. She was married to Abe nearly 49 years. After he died in
1987, Esther, in her mid-seventies at the time, worked tirelessly to sell the
family business, Kaner Iron & Metal Co. In addition to her husband, Abe, Esther was preceded in
death by parents, Lena and David Bloomenthal; brothers, Ben and Louis
Bloomenthal; and sisters, Rose Schraber and Mildred Bloomenthal. In addition to her children, she is survived by
son-in-law, Ray Munic of Duluth, George Bigelow (Elyse's fiance) of St. Paul,
and several nieces, nephews and their children. A heartfelt thanks goes to Dr. Georgia Brunette, the
caring staff at Villa-Marina Health and Rehabilitation Center in Superior and
We Care For You caregivers. Donations to a charity of your choice in lieu of flowers
are preferred and most gratefully appreciated. The funeral will be held at 11:30 a.m. Sunday at Downs
Funeral Home, 1617 North 19th St. in Superior. Rabbi Barry Woolf will
officiate. Interment at Superior Hebrew Cemetery following the service. Esther's mottos were "nothing beats fun" and
